2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Follows Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure notified team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the need for a distinct direction.
The president noted that the team is now overhauling the project with a revised vision, aiming to better meet community desires.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
The news follows a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.
Here is the entire text from Ismailer's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and creative creators we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to persist.”
Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It uncovered the necessity for a sharper vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s positioned to achieve its potential to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Studio Head of the team. After some time of talks, he starts with us on the specified date.
His guidance and experience in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having devoted the recent years developing and managing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in receiving him in the coming days. We are all eager to continue observing the progress of Project ETHOS in the months to ahead.
The President
Experience of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman currently serves in the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He previously was employed at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Details and Concept
The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 alongside a early access event. Then, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch explains. "Take on the competition with unique powers, challenges, and challenges that shift every session. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and hope your squad can achieve the highest spot? The decision is yours."
Project Ethos does not have an official launch window or consoles, but players can anticipate more updates as development advances.
